Week 20-Social Networks, Day 5-Crowdrise

Never even heard of Crowdrise?  Me neither until I was flipping through the pages of my April edition of Glamour magazine and saw this article.  If you were the producer of Elf, The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, and Anchorman would you switch careers to start a social networking site with your boyfriend to raise money for charity?  Shauna Robertson did.  She realized that even though she was making everyone else laugh, there was something missing and only she could change it.  With the help of her boyfriend, one Mr. Edward Norton, she left her seven-figure salary and started CR in May of last year.  In that short period of time they have raised over $1 million and some change per month for some very worthy causes.  I’m so thankful some people still follow their dream to make other people’s dreams come true. I quickly decided that I needed to be a part of this CR movement, so I signed up.  I started looking around and saw some familiar charities and a couple of new ones.  i am that girl has a great name and a great mission.  IATG works to inspire authentic confidence in girls and women everywhere so they can have a positive impact on the world.  We can all be that girl by supporting our fellow female friends and celebrating our uniqueness and diversity.  In a day and age when HDTV and reality TV make all of us at home feel like we’re not good enough, IATG is there to remind us that we are.  We have the power to define our own worth, be comfortable in our own skin, believe in ourselves, and reinvent ourselves as many times and as often as we like.  I am that girl, and I want my friends, my family, and my future daughter to be that girl.  I know a big reason I am that girl is because of my love of reading and passion to learn, which was highly encouraged by my parents.  Reader to Reader is a non-profit that is changing the world one book at a time.  RTR is dedicated to bringing books to needy school and public libraries all across America at not cost to them!  RTR reaches out to the country’s poorest communities, like inner-city schools and poor rural towns.  RTR has donated over $40 million worth of books and computers since the idea was first hatched in 2000.  Giving the gift of reading is literally priceless to both the giver and the receiver.  So from reader to reader, donate those old books you know you’re never going to get around to re-reading.

So here’s to you Crowdrise!  I am so thankful that I found you hidden among nautical wedges and new ways to wear blush this summer.  You are a refreshing and a wonderful take on what social networking can be used to accomplish.  You give people a new, fun, engaging way to give back and make new friends all at the same time.  You have helped me figure out that reader to reader, i am that girl.  Appreciate it, and I can’t wait to return the favor.
